Renovating And Improving A Loft Conversion in Poole

We were contacted by a young couple in Poole because they wanted to renovate and improve their existing loft conversion.
Having heard about The Conversion Kings from word of mouth, they decided to contact us for a quote and consultation, from which they chose to use our services.
What We Did
Our clients were looking to expand the space in their loft conversion so they could add a new bathroom and bedroom.
Understanding Desires
After they enquired with us, the process started with a site visit and consultation. During this, we assessed their current loft conversion and learnt what they were looking for with this new work.
As we discussed the desire to expand the space to suit more functionality, we were able to share our expertise by discussing ideas and opportunities as well as explaining limitations and additional work that might be required.
With a quote agreed upon, our recommended architects and structural engineers went ahead to create detailed drawings to finalise the work they would be doing.
From here, we arranged a date for the work, started sourcing all the materials and completed any planning permission that might be needed.
Site Preparations
Because we were adding a rear dormer to the roof, the first thing we did before starting work was erect scaffolding.
As we were replacing an existing conversion, our work started by removing the existing flooring, insulation, plasterboard and fixtures.
We disconnected the electrical supply to the space and disposed of all the materials.
Then, the work really started.
Structural Work and New Dormer Installation
Because we were changing the staircase, we had to alter the first-floor landing joists.
With this done, we moved on to constructing the new dormer framework, ensuring alignment with the roof structure. Once the framework and support structure were in place, we fit the insulation and weatherproof roofing materials. Finally, the windows for ventilation and natural light.
Staircase Removal and Installation
With the dormer in place, we returned to the new staircase, carefully removing the existing one while ensuring minimal disruption. We installed the new one and secured it with staircase joists, making sure it all complied with Building Regulations.
Plumbing and Electrical Work
With the staircase in place, our focus shifted to installing the plumbing for the new bathroom and ensuring the space was fully equipped with the necessary wiring. This included fitting sockets, extractor fans, and heating to make the loft both functional and comfortable. Throughout the process, we adhered to Part P electrical safety regulations, ensuring all work met the highest standards.
Insulation and Plastering
Finally, with the structural components in place, we were able to start making the loft conversion look like a habitable space.
Firstly, we installed insulation to meet thermal efficiency standards.
Then we fitted plasterboard to the walls and ceiling. This was skimmed with plaster to create a smooth finish.
Interior Finish
Of course, this was topped with paint and decorating in the style discussed with the client.
We then fitted the bathroom and added all the bedroom furniture and fixtures in.
Finally, we installed the doors, skirting boards and storage solutions.
Final Checks
All our projects are finished with our team performing thorough safety checks, making sure all fire and smoke alarms are working, electrical and plumbing systems function as they should, and the structural integrity is maintained.
Among these checks, we also ensured compliance with Building Regulations and that the necessary certifications were gathered.
With the legal work in place, we completed a walk-through with our clients, showing our work and addressing final touch-ups that might be needed. This is a vital part of our completion process as it allows us to make sure our clients are happy with the work we have done and resolve any issues.
Delighted with the works completed, we handed over all warranty documents they needed and signed off the job.

The End Result
The result was a renovated loft conversion with additional space and a new purpose.
A dormer extension created extra space that allowed a bathroom to be installed, and a new staircase modernised the entrance to the improved space.
Overall, the conversion added an extra bedroom and bathroom, which added value to the property.
